Roatan is known internationally as one of the best locations for snorkeling. With the second largest barrier reef system surrounding the island, the diversity of fish life and coral reef growth is astounding. If you visit Roatan, you simply must go snorkeling so you can see this wonder for yourself!

Whether you are an avid snorkeler or you have never stepped foot in the ocean, Jolly Roger Roatan tours cater to all levels for your safety and enjoyment. Here are our safety tips for all snorkelers in Roatan, which we adhere to on our tours every day.

– Wear a life preserver or snorkel vest. While you might consider yourself an amazing swimmer, you will probably stay out in the water longer than you are accustomed to do, so it is best to take safety precautions and have a flotation device with you in case you need to rest. We have life vests on board for every guests comfort and safety.

– Ask for help. If you are a new snorkeler or you feel uncomfortable at all, tell a Jolly Roger Roatan crewmember so we can ensure your safety and enjoyment. We separate our snorkelers into advanced and beginner groups so we can cater to your needs. If you have never snorkeled before or you are not a strong swimmer, stay with the beginners and follow your guide. We have a snorkel guide with each group, plus additional Jolly Roger Roatan crewmembers in kayaks around the groups should you need assistance.

– Remember the tropical sun is strong! We snorkel for around an hour, and many guests like to sit in the sun while on the catamaran as well. Keep in mind that you need to stay hydrated and protected from overexposure to the sun. Wear eco-friendly sunscreen so you do not damage the coral reef, and you may want to wear a shirt while snorkeling to protect your back and shoulders.

– Do not touch any coral. A coral reef is a living thing; anytime you touch it you can kill areas much larger than just where your fingers hit. Beyond that, coral can cut you very easily and can cause infections. There is a large amount of bacteria growing on coral, so be careful to avoid it! Always follow your Jolly Roger Roatan snorkel guide to avoid shallow areas and to ensure you have a great time!

Jolly Roger Roatan cruises offer ample opportunity to enjoy our stunning coral reef system and all of the beautiful marine life we see there on a regular basis. We want you to have a fantastic day with us! Come join Jolly Roger Roatan for the tour of a lifetime.
